Sharks star Evander Kane files for bankruptcy, sued by bank

  • Report: Sharks' Evander Kane, nearly $27 million in debt, files for bankruptcy

This is according to a report in The Athletic by Daniel Kaplan, which says the 29-year-old National Hockey League star filed for Chapter 7 in USA federal bankruptcy court.

His extension with the San Jose franchise came in 2018, with a total amount of 49 million dollars being paid to him over a period of seven years.

Kane, now with the San Jose Sharks, has somehow incurred debts of $26.8 million, according to a story from The Athletic. As part of the filing, Kane says that he might not even play this season, eliminating his income.

Kane reportedly filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy Saturday, citing debts of almost $27 million and assets of $10.2 million. It's unclear from the filing where the debt stems from but in the filing Kane listed nine lawsuits and 47 creditors and claims that he has seven dependents. The largest was with Centennial Bank, which sued Kane last week for $8.3 million.

An attachment to the voluntary bankruptcy petition explained Kane's salary will be lower than expected this season due to the NHL's shortened season.

"The Players' Association in particular would play a significant role in any termination conversation, with five seasons and $29 million remaining on Kane's contract", Friedman wrote.

Boughner confirmed Kane will play Thursday in the Sharks' season opener against the Arizona Coyotes, and he had nothing but good to say about the veteran's showing in training camp. "I won't make a comment on any player's personal situation, but I am assured that he will be here for the whole season, and he's on board".
