Bad omen? Tower of London raven missing, feared dead

  • Queen raven at Tower of London 'missing and feared dead' | London | ITV News

One of the Tower of London's infamous raven residents has gone missing, and the Tower of London tweeted that "her continued absence indicates to us that she may have sadly passed away". "But I'm her buddy and normally she comes back to us, but this time she didn't, so I do fear that she is not with us anymore".

The Tower of London, England announced that one of the famous "Queen's Crows" had been missing for several weeks, raising concerns that she might be dead.

"I know so many of you lovely folk will be saddened by this news", he said in a social media statement.

This is worrying news because, according to a firmly rooted legend, if all the crows were to leave the tower, the kingdom would "collapse" and the country would be "plunged into chaos".

Merlina has been the "undisputed ruler of the roost" since she joined the Tower ravens in 2007, but it wasn't "unusual" for her to roam.

Merlina's loss means there are currently seven ravens in residence, so the kingdom is safe for now - barring any calamities at the parliament of rooks upriver at Westminster.

After being advised that killing all the ravens would be a bad omen, Charles II then ordered six birds to be kept at the tower. This article was amended on 14 January 2021. Her master, Chris Skaife, fears that she has ascended to heaven for good.

"We now have seven ravens here at the Tower, one more than the required six, so we don't have any immediate plans to fill Merlina's vacancy".

Skaife, a former staff sergeant and drum major in the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, faced an unprecedented challenge entertaining the Tower's celebrated avian residents during the coronavirus lockdown past year.

Ravenmaster Christopher Skaife misses Merlina greatly and said he would be taking some time off to mourn Merlina. "Should the ravens leave the tower, a great harm will befall the kingdom, it will crumble into dust", he said, before clarifying with a chuckle, "Of course that's all myth and legend".
