Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has tested positive for coronavirus, the team have confirmed.

Leclerc said he had mild symptoms and was isolating in his home in Monaco.

In a social media post, Ferrari said: "Scuderia Ferrari Mission Winnow driver Charles Leclerc has tested positive for COVID-19".

"I think what we have to do as usual is to optimise the team points, and when you optimise the team points, normally you are optimising the drivers' points as well".

Leclerc was tested after he learned he had been in contact with a positive case. A test I took later came out positive.

"I am feeling okay and have mild symptoms". I will remain in isolation in my home in Monaco in complicate with the regulations set by the local health authorities.

Leclerc is now the fifth F1 driver to test positive for COVID-19.

Leclerc follows McLaren's Lando Norris in testing positive in the break between seasons, with Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll and Lewis Hamilton all missing races a year ago with the virus.

World Champion Lewis Hamilton returned a positive test the day after taking victory in Bahrain.

McLaren's F1 racer Norris was the most recent, testing positive while on holiday in Dubai earlier this month before a winter training camp.

The Ferrari team issued a statement echoing Leclerc's message, confirming he was regularly tested in line with its protocols. "Stay safe and take care", he wrote. The season was mostly staged without any spectators save for limited entry to a few events. The start of the season has been delayed, after the season-opening Australian Grand Prix announced its postponement last week.
