  • Flaviane Carvalho speaks in a video about noticing a little boy in trouble

Flavaine Carvalho, works at a restaurant in Florida, USA, and was serving patrons on New Year's Day when she noticed something worrying about one family of diners. "That was the first thing that (got) my attention", Carvalho said. "That's how horrific the recollection of the abuse the child shared with us was".

"'Abuse, ' I say lightly", Lawler said Thursday at a news conference.

She said he was made to hold a plank position for 30 minutes and punished when he couldn't.

"I could see he had a big scratch between his eyebrows", Carvalho said.

She asked the table if their food and drinks were OK. When the one of the adults replied that the boy would eat his dinner at home, Carvalho said she began to think something else was going on.

"You don't deny food for a kid, especially in a restaurant", Carvalho said.

His stepfather told Carvalho that the boy would be eating at home later, but she spotted bruises on the child's face and arms. "Ok" on a piece of paper and showed it to the child after she noticed his family withholding food from him.

Caravalho wrote a note asking the boy if he was OK and stood behind the parents where they couldn't see.

The boy nodded no. One sign asked the boy, "Do you need help?"

The server flashed a handwritten note to a little boy at her table.

On a piece of paper, she wrote "Do you need help?" Carvalho said the boy nodded yes and "made a movement with his hands showing he didn't know what to do".
