Is Selena Gomez channeling her Hispanic roots? Hear her new songs

The rumors have proved more than founded: Selena Gomez has chosen to sing in Spanish in her new single "De Una Vez", available from Friday 15 January together with the official video. The artist's announcement was met with a lot of excitement from her fandom.

It's now unclear whether De Una Vez will appear as part of a larger Spanish-language body of work, though upon revealing it she wrote: "This is the beginning of something I've wanted to explore for so long".

However, some fans are coming to Gomez's defence, claiming that her relationship with Bieber has been over for three years and there's no way this new song is about him. (...) The amusing thing is that now I think I'm singing better in Spanish. "Esta noche. Presave ahora".

Selena Gomez & The Scene released a Spanish version of the song called "Un Año Sin Lluvia", but yesterday's release is the singer's debut Spanish single without The Scene next to her name.

In 2017, she told Vogue she was re-learning the language "which she spoke fluently as a little girl but lost, in the hope of recording some Spanish-language music in the future". "Taki Taki" quickly became one of Gomez's biggest hits, peaking at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

For her first song in Spanish, she revealed that it was challenging to master the specific timing and quick cues.

Selena Gomez has expressed that she believes she represents the Latinx community, but wasn't shy about admitting that she could do more to identify with her Mexican heritage.
