  • New York Dolls Sylvain Sylvain Dies at 69

New York Dolls co-founder Sylvain Sylvain has lost his battle with cancer.

Sylvain's wife, Wanda O'Kelley Mizrahi, paid tribute to her late husband in a Facebook post written Thursday.

She wrote on his Facebook page that the guitarist had "battled cancer for the past 2 ½ years".

Sylvain announced in April 2019 that he was diagnosed with cancer as a GoFundMe page was set up to pay for medical expenses.

Lenny Kaye, Patti Smith's long-time guitarist and a veteran music writer, wrote in a tribute accompanying the announcement of Sylvain's death: "His role in the band was as lynchpin, keeping the revolving satellites of his bandmates in precision".

"Syl never stopped. In his solo lifeline, he was welcomed all over the world, from England to Japan, but most of all the rock dens of New York City, which is where I caught up with him a couple of years ago at the Bowery Electric". He joined the New York Dolls shortly after their formation in 1971 and remained with the band until their dissolution in 1976. Johansen and Thunders, on lead guitar, took center stage with a rowdy visual interplay that evoked Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones.

As the band's rhythm guitarist, though, it was Sylvain whose sleazy-catchy riffs provided a solid foundation for all the flamboyance; he also played piano on the group's self-titled 1973 debut, which was produced by no less a pop perfectionist than Todd Rundgren.

"The New York Dolls heralded the future, made it easy to dance to".

Sylvain Mizrahi, better known as Sylvain Sylvain, songwriter and founding member of the NEW YORK DOLLS, has died at the age of 69. He designed clothes as a teenager and then began playing music, cycling through several acts that eventually became the Dolls.

The group's down-and-dirty approach was a response to the structural pretensions of the "stadium rock era", as Sylvain said in a 2006 interview with Brooklyn Vegan. "The 20-minute drum solos, songs that were a big operetta".

"There wasn't a lot of intellectualizing going on when we started", Johansen said in "Please Kill Me", Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain's seminal 1996 oral history of punk.

With Sylvain's death, Johansen is the only surviving member of that classic line-up.

"Sylvain Sylvain, the heart and soul of the New York Dolls, bearer of the Teenage News, passed into his next astral incarnation on Wednesday, January 13, 2021".

"It was he who looked across Lexington Ave. and saw the sign for the New York Doll hospital". He later worked on various projects, including a band called THE CRIMINALS and another group called THE TEARDROPS. Combining an aggressively androgynous style with street-smart NY attitude and campy humor, the NY DOLLS ushered in the era of CBGBs, heroin chic, loud guitars and referential lyrics which gave rise to Patti Smith, the RAMONES, TELEVISION and many more. "I should be bitter".
