The study - which has not yet been peer reviewed - found that past infection was linked to an 83% lower risk of reinfection, compared to people who have not been infected before.

Between June 18 and November 24, scientists found 44 potential reinfections - two "probable" and 42 "possible" - among 6,614 participants who had tested positive for antibodies.

They also warned that people with so-called "natural immunity" - acquired through having had the infection - may still be able carry the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in their nose and throat, and could unwittingly pass it on. This represents an 83% rate of protection from reinfection, they said. "But there is still a risk you could acquire an infection and transmit (it) to others", Hopkins said. Over the next year or two we'll probably get a better sense of how long protection lasts.

Professor Susan Hopkins, senior medical adviser at PHE and the Siren study lead, said: "This study has given us the clearest picture to date of the nature of antibody protection against Covid-19 but it is critical people do not misunderstand these early findings".

The disease first broke out in Wuhan, China in December 2019, which was declared a pandemic a little over two months later by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The SIREN study involves tens of thousands of healthcare workers in Britain who have been tested regularly since June for new COVID-19 infections as well as for the presence of antibodies.

According to Worldometer, which has been tracking deaths, new infections and recoveries since the onset of the disease, the total number of deaths from Covid-19 stands at 2,010,108, as of 6:10pm GMT on Friday (12:10am Saturday, Bangladesh time).

However, despite this, ministers told Parliament last week that vaccinations for people who have had Covid-19 should only be deferred for at least four weeks after the onset of symptoms.

Another equally concerning finding from the research is that previously-infected people can still carry high enough levels of the coronavirus that could continue to infect others.

More than 3.5 million people in the United Kingdom have vaccinated against coronavirus in the United Kingdom - more than the number of people who have tested positive for the virus, latest government figures show.

Murphy said at his COVID briefing that the state is simply following federal guidelines by including smokers in the vaccine rollout.

Richter said the mixture of these natural antibodies, mixed with the vaccines now being rolled out, would help reduce cases.

Now more than ever it is vital we all stay at home to protect our health service and save lives, she added.
