A heavily armed man has been arrested in Washington at a security checkpoint near the US Capitol, where President-elect Joe Biden will be inaugurated next week, authorities said.
A spokeswoman for the Capitol Policetold the Times that Beeler had shown a "nongovernment issued" credential.
U.S. Capitol Police said that Mr. Beeler was stopped Friday night at 6:30 p.m.at a security checkpoint established in anticipation of the upcoming inauguration of President-elect Joseph R. Biden.
Beeler, from Front Royal, Virginia, presented officers with what was described as an unauthorized inauguration credential. He said he had been working a security job in Washington, was running late to work, and had forgotten that his firearm was in his truck.
Beeler is charged with Carrying a Pistol without a License (CPWOL); Possession of an Unregistered Firearm, and Possession of Unregistered Ammunition, the Capitol Police press release states.
