A heavily armed man has been arrested in Washington at a security checkpoint near the US Capitol, where President-elect Joe Biden will be inaugurated next week, authorities said.

A spokeswoman for the Capitol Police told the Times that Beeler had shown a "nongovernment issued" credential.

U.S. Capitol Police said that Mr. Beeler was stopped Friday night at 6:30 p.m.at a security checkpoint established in anticipation of the upcoming inauguration of President-elect Joseph R. Biden.

Beeler, from Front Royal, Virginia, presented officers with what was described as an unauthorized inauguration credential. He said he had been working a security job in Washington, was running late to work, and had forgotten that his firearm was in his truck.

Beeler is charged with Carrying a Pistol without a License (CPWOL); Possession of an Unregistered Firearm, and Possession of Unregistered Ammunition, the Capitol Police press release states.

Christie said that the past three months have proven that the company can make large-scale remote working a viable option. In Twitter's case, the company has no plans to reopen offices before September, with only a few exceptions.

Officers searched his truck, which had several gun-related bumper stickers, and found a loaded Glock pistol, 509 rounds for the pistol and 21 shotgun shells, the police said.

As officers checked it against the authorized access list, one noticed decals on the back of Beeler's pick-up truck that said "Assault Life", with an image of a rifle, and another with the message: "If they come for your guns, give 'em your bullets first".

A police incident report alleged that Beeler had two guns, 509 rounds of ammunition, almost two dozen 12-gauge shotgun shells, and a high-capacity magazine.

Areas surrounding the U.S. Capitol and the White House are now under intense security following the January 6 riots, where Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building as Congress certified Joe Biden's win in the 2020 election. Ms. Beeler also said that she hadn't been in contact with him since Friday, when he had been headed to work.

In preparation for Biden's inauguration on Wednesday, more than 20,000 National Guard troops are on the ground in D.C., and much of the area has been fenced off.
