Nepal Climbers 1st To Scale K2, World's 2nd Highest Mountain, In Winter

The winter summiteers were: Nimsdai Purja, Mingma David Sherpa, Mingma Tenzi Sherpa, Geljen Sherpa, Pem Chiri Sherpa, Dawa Temba Sherpa, of Team Nimsdai; Mingma Gyalje Sherpa, Dawa Tenzing Sherpa, Kilu Pemba Sherpa of Team Mingma G; and Sona Sherpa of Team Seven Summits Trek.

While climbers were making bids to the summit, there was bad news at base camp.

But lower down the mountain, climbers were mourning the death of Sergi Mingote - a Spanish climber. It had never before been summited during winter. According to Radio Pakistan, the team was led by Chhang Dawa Sherpa.

Despite being famed for their climbing expertise, there has never before been a Nepali climber on the first winter ascent of a peak over 8,000 metres.

Former Gurkha and Special Boat Service soldier Nirmal "Nims" Purja and nine other Nepalese climbers reached the summit of K2 at midday United Kingdom time.

"It is wonderful that today on K2 10 Nepalis have made history and shown our bravery and strength", added Mr Rita, who has climbed Everest a record 24 times.

Earlier on December 19, 2020, an worldwide winter K2 expedition reached Pakistan.

A team of climbers triumphed yesterday, becoming the first to conquer the world's second-highest mountain in winter.
