  • The pigeon from Alabama is suspected to have blown off course and hitched a boat ride across the ocean skipping quarantine for imported poultry

He has since been nursed back to full health, but it is still expected to be killed.

He discovered Joe's origins when its band wasn't registered locally.

Dem say dem go catch di bird and give am painless death. He also found that a male bird had gone missing.

A racing pigeon detained by Australian authorities and set to be destroyed over concerns it was an American intruder received a lifeline Friday, when experts revealed its leg tag was probably fake.

Celli-Bird told CBS News that he told them he doesn't think he can even catch the bird, because every time he gets close to it, it moves.

The bird was later given the name Joe, after President elect Joe Biden.

Earlier on Friday, American Racing Pigeon Union spokeswoman Deone Roberts said the racing tag attached to the Joe's leg, which had originally been traced back to Montgomery, Alabama, was forged.

"It poses a direct biosecurity risk to Australian bird life and our poultry industry", it said in a statement.

Subsequently, this pigeon was declared to be a biosecurity risk by Australian authorities, and is now being investigated by biosecurity officers from Australia's Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment.

Hollywood actor Johnny Depp and his then wife Amber Heard were charged with illegally bringing their Yorkshire terriers Pistol and Boo into Australia in 2015, but the animals were spared after their owners agreed to be bound by a good behaviour bond. The couple offered an apology. "Either fly home or face the consequences".

He said quarantine authorities were now considering contracting a professional bird catcher. "Maybe we could have gotten a presidential pardon or diplomatic immunity".

But, late in the day, a reprieve came from the Department of Agriculture.

The feat first drew attention from local media before Australia's Quarantine and Inspection Service became aware, according to Sky News. "She was going to call him Donald but we thought that might not be politically correct, so she called him Joe instead", he told TV broadcaster Nine Network.

Joe the racing pigeon made a remarkable 13,000-kilometre journey flying from Alabama in the United States to Melbourne on Boxing Day.

The agriculture department said it was "investigating the authenticity of the US identification tag". He stressed that he had no intention of misleading anyone.

"The band number belongs to a blue bar pigeon in the United States and that is not the bird pictured in Australia", she said.

In other words, the bird was deemed not to be an American intruder.

The whole thing remains surrounded by mystery as no one knows why the pigeon was carrying that band. If it turns out that the pigeon is, in fact, female, he said, "we might have to change it to Joanna or something".

"It does happen. We get birds in the United States that come from Japan", Cramer said.
