  • 'We are under siege': Bobi Wine says military raided home as he rejects 'rigged' Uganda election results

Journalists traveling to Wine's residence for a press conference were turned back by security forces before reaching his home.

In a phone interview from his home, which he said was surrounded by soldiers, Mr Wine urged the worldwide community to "please call General Museveni to order" by withholding aid, imposing sanctions and using Magnitsky legislation to hold alleged human rights abusers accountable.

The singer-turned-MP was among 10 opposition candidates and came second with 34.8 per cent of the votes.

The Electoral Commission said final counts showed Mr Museveni won 5.85 million votes, or 58.6 per cent, while Mr Wine had 3.48 million votes.

He said turnout was 57.22 percent of the nearly 18 million registered voters.

Mr Museveni, in a wide-ranging speech on state television after the announcement, thanked his supporters and said that now, "the only thing to avoid is violence".

Ugandans voted in the poll on Thursday amid the internet shutdown.

They also followed one of the bloodiest campaigns in years, with harassment and detentions of opposition figures, attacks on the media and the deaths of at least 54 people in protests in November, on one of the multiple occasions when Bobi Wine was arrested.

Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has said he has video proof of voting fraud that he will share once internet connections are restored.

The army's deputy spokesman Deo Akiiki said the soldiers were there to provide security and had stopped three people who tried to "access the house".

"The entire process has been conducted in [the] dark and it lacks transparency", Katana, head agent of Bobi Wine's National Unity Platform, told Al Jazeera from the tally centre in Kampala.

He told Reuters on Saturday that his campaign has evidence that the military forced people at gunpoint to vote for Mr Museveni and engaged in ballot stuffing and other rigging. They don't need me or Bobi Wine to tell them to get angry. "I am sure what they announced is false, but right now we can't take them on, they will kill us".

However, 35-year-old electrician Dennis Tusiime was celebrating the result.

"My grandfather told me about the old regimes", he said. "I am very, very happy".

Tracking the vote was further complicated by the arrests of independent monitors and the denial of accreditation to most members of the American observer mission, leading the United States to call it off.

"Many in Uganda and beyond have expressed concerns about the overall political climate in the run-up to the elections as well as the electoral process".

Security personnel and police were out in force patrolling Kampala on Saturday.

Wearing his signature hat and speaking from his rural home on Saturday evening, Museveni criticised "the elite" for problems with the national education and health systems and noted that Uganda has surplus supplies of sugar, milk and maize.

Once hailed for his commitment to good governance, the former rebel leader has crushed any opposition and tweaked the constitution to allow himself to run again and again.

And for many in the country, where the median age is 16, Museveni's glory days are no longer relevant or sufficient.

This month, Wine petitioned the International Criminal Court over alleged torture and other abuses by security forces and named several officials including Museveni.

His newly formed NUP party is on track however to become the main opposition party in parliament, notably winning eight of nine constituencies in the capital Kampala.
