Britain has invited Australia, India, and South Korea with the aim of using the occasion to boost cooperation among democracies.

Johnson will host the summit, the first in-person gathering for the G-7 leaders in nearly two years, in southwest England June 11-13, the U.K. Cabinet Office said in an emailed statement.

Johnson had accepted Modi's invitation to be the chief guest at India's Republic Day parade but later cancelled his visit after announcing a country-wide shutdown over the mutant virus.

The centre had suspended flight operations between India and the United Kingdom for over two weeks because of the new strain, which was first detected in the European country. "India already supplies more than 50 per cent of the world's vaccines, and the United Kingdom and India have worked closely together throughout the pandemic".

The three countries have been invited to the summit as guests to "deepen the expertise and experience around the table".

"As the most prominent grouping of democratic countries, the G7 has always been the catalyst for decisive worldwide action to tackle the greatest challenges we face", the Prime Minister said, as quoted in the statement.

The summit in June will address shared challenges, from beating coronavirus and tackling climate change, to ensuring that people everywhere can benefit from open trade, technological change and scientific discovery.

Johnson's office said he would use the summit to promote a green recovery from the pandemic, encouraging G7 members to unite to "make the future fairer, greener and more prosperous".
