  • People get Covid-19 vaccine

The Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has said he hopes everyone over the age of 18 will be offered the covid vaccine by September.

The foreign minister said the government will "tighten up" enforcement of worldwide travel restrictions with more border controls and increased capacity to ensure people self-isolate.

Mr Raab told Sky's Sophy Ridge on Sunday: "We will consider all the measures in the round. If we can do it faster than that, great, but that's the roadmap".

Mr Raab's pledge came amid dire warnings about the "extreme pressure" on the NHS - as it was revealed a coronavirus patient is admitted to hospital "every thirty seconds".

NHS England's chief executive, Sit Simon Stevens, told BBC's Andrew Marr show on Sunday that 140 jabs are being delivered "every minute".

The latest 24-hour figures for the United Kingdom show there have been more than 38 thousand new cases.

The Foreign Secretary said the aim was to have 88 per cent of those most at risk of dying of coronavirus to have their first jab by mid-February, and by the early spring to have 99 per cent inoculated.

After then, he suggested, lockdown restrictions could be gradually eased - with a possible return to the tiered system.

The government has a target of getting the most at risk from coronavirus vaccinated by the middle of February - with the hope that will mean current restrictions can be eased by March.

She told Sky: "Really, we want to get back to the situation we were in the summer with relatively low case numbers compared to now, so that we can actually test and trace and reduce onward infections".

Focus is on the the vaccine rollout.

"That will hopefully protect those that are most vulnerable to the severe consequences of this disease".

When asked if people arriving in the United Kingdom might be forced to quarantine in special hotels, Dominic Raab said: "We have looked at all the possibilities".

"Also, because the effect of abolishing or suspending the travel corridors is that people go into quarantine and self-isolation for 10 days, we're making sure that Public Health England checks to make sure people are adhering to those rules".

The country, which has Europe's highest COVID-19 death toll, has been under a national lockdown since January 5, when schools were closed for most pupils, non-essential businesses were shut to the public, and people were ordered to work from home where possible.
