Indonesian Semeru volcano erupts, spews ash 5km into sky

Mount Semeru, the highest volcano in Indonesia's East Java province, which erupted on Saturday, went viral.

The country's disaster mitigation agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the possibility of evacuation.

Residents of the Curah Kobokan river basin have been urged to watch for possible "cold lava" mudflow, which can be triggered by intense rainfall combining with volcanic material.

Indonesia's Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center did not raise Semeru's alert status, which already had been at the third-highest level since it began erupting in May.

However, the death is unrelated to vaccination , said the district's Chief Medical Officer, reported NDTV . They also noted that Mahipal's death was not linked to vaccine side effects.
