China to sanction US officials for 'nasty behavior' over Taiwan

  • Mike Pompeo has spent his final days in office unveiling a host of measures targeting Beijing

Mike Pompeo, a hawk who never misses an opportunity to speak out against China, has spent his last days as head of USA diplomacy taking action against Beijing.

The spokesperson noted that certain anti-China U.S. politicians like Pompeo have continued their rampant interference in China's Hong Kong affairs and have adopted a practice of imposing so-called sanctions, which only expose their sinister intentions to contain China under any pretext. It was unclear from Hua's reply Monday whether the Hong Kong-related sanctions were new.

Chinese ministry's spokesperson Hua Chunying said that United States officials would face sanctions after China pledged to make the U.S. "pay a heavy price" for engaging with Taiwan, as reported by Reuters.

On Wednesday, Democrat Joe Biden will be sworn-in as the president of the USA, with the relationship between U.S. and Taiwan vis-a-vis China expected to see some change.

When asked about US sanctions on six mainland and Hong Kong officials announced last Friday over the mass arrests in Hong Kong, Hua said that China has chose to impose sanctions on USA officials, members of Congress, personnel at nongovernmental organizations and their family members over their "nasty behavior" on the Hong Kong issue.

This was an apparent reference to an old Chinese saying about a mantis attempting to stop a chariot, referring to a person who is seeking to overrate themselves.

Toutes les victimes sont décédées de fièvres et de nausées, qui suivaient l'administration du vaccin Pfizer-BioNTech. Le retard de production annoncé à l'usine de Puurs, près de Berlin, devrait donc être limité à une semaine.

The office rejected the U.S. sanctions as "a political trick when all other tricks are exhausted", also calling on Pompeo to "wind up the show", in a apparent nod to the secretary of state's upcoming departure from office.

Hong Kong was rocked in 2019 by seven months of huge and often violent pro-democracy protests.

China put an end to the movement, including a year ago imposing a draconian national security law on the financial center.

At least 90 people have been arrested under the new law while many more face other charges linked to protests or campaigning for democracy.

China says it has restored stability, while critics argue Beijing has shredded its promise that Hong Kong would maintain key liberties and autonomy when it was handed back by Britain.

The US had previously imposed sanctions over the crackdown, including against city leader Carrie Lam who later acknowledged that she has had to rely on cash and can no longer hold a bank account.
