Argentine golfer Angel Cabrera, a two-time major victor, was arrested in Brazil on Thursday in connection with assault charges leveled against him in his homeland, police and diplomats said. It described him only as a 51-year-old Argentine.

The arrest took place in a high-ranking area of Rio de Janeiro, as declared by the Brazilian federal police without initially providing the name of the person but only age and nationality, then two officers, who agreed to provide the information only by remaining anonymous because they weren't allowed to discuss the matter publicly, they confirmed it was Cabrera. Initially, Brazilian authorities did not explicitly identify the arrested man.

He won the U.S. Open at Oakmont in 2007 by one shot over Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk.

The police operation, according to the media, attended a preventive arrest order for extradition purposes issued by the Supreme Federal Court (STF), highest court in the country, at the request of the National Central Office of Interpol in Brasilia, who considered Cabrera a fugitive from Argentine Justice.

It had been reported by the Argentine media at the start of the new year that Cabrera was on the run from his homeland after his former wife filed two charges against him and another former partner claimed Cabrera had punched her, threatened her and attemped to run her down with his auto. His second major followed at the 2009 Masters when Cabrera beat America pair Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry and a play-off.

Argentine media reported earlier in January that Cabrera's former wife, Silva Rivadero, had filed two charges against the golfer. He came close to taking a second green jacket in 2013, but lost a sudden-death playoff to Adam Scott.

The Cordoba player boasts another Pga Tour win, as well as four European Tour titles, including the main event, the BMW Pga Championship at Wentworth. He missed the rescheduled November Masters after having wrist surgery.
