It's outrageous, says PM Johnson over deleted police records

The leader of the opposition Labour Party, Keir Starmer, quoted police chiefs as saying 403,000 records from the Police National Computer might have been deleted, as well as 26,000 DNA records and 30,000 fingerprint records from other databases been deleted.

"Of course it is outrageous that any data should have been lost but at the moment ... we're trying to retrieve that data", Johnson told parliament.

Mr Johnson told the House of Commons that the Government did not yet know how many criminal investigations had been "frustrated" by the incident but said the Home Office was working "around the clock" to find the lost information.

The terse exchange came after Home Secretary Priti Patel said criminals would not get away with serious crimes as a result of the PNC data blunder.

Johnson said 213,000 offence records, 175,000 arrest records and 15,000 personal records were being investigated as a result of the computer issues.

Last week it was revealed that the information was wiped from the Police National Computer (PNC) - which stores and shares criminal records information across the United Kingdom - after being inadvertently flagged for deletion. It includes data on those convicted, wanted people, missing people, vehicles, and stolen goods.

"This will take time because it is a coding error, it is a coding system error that materialised".

The Home Office previously said that the faulty script was introduced in November 2020, but it did not run until earlier this month when the error within it immediately became apparent.
