  • Report: Veteran left-hander Jon Lester agrees to deal with Nationals

Veteran free-agent left-hander Jon Lester agreed to a one-year deal to join the Washington Nationals with a club option for a second season, ESPN reported Monday. Lester's best season in Chicago came in 2016, where he was runner up for the National League Cy Young Award and started Game 7 of the World Series, which the Cubs ultimately won to snap a 108-year championship drought. The question isn't what Lester can do in joining a clubhouse (and rotation) that includes Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Patrick Corbin.

Lester turned 37 this month and will be heading into his 16th season in 2021.

While numerous reports mentioned that Lester badly wanted to stay in Chicago, the familiarity of the coaching staff and a chance to win again - for a guy who already owns three World Series rings - are powerful persuasion.

Lester pitched 61 innings across 12 starts during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, going 3-3 with a career-high 5.16 ERA for the Cubs. He was 1-1 in the World Series against the Cleveland Indians with a 3.68 ERA.
