'On Australia Day, it's all about acknowledging how far we've come, ' Mr Morrison told reporters in Queensland on Thursday.

"I can tell you that we feel sick to think that January 26 is a day that the leaders of this country should choose as the national day of celebration".

The public holiday matches will now be spruiked as "January 26" games after consultation with Indigenous leaders.

Cricket Australia's Mel Jones has stood firm behind their recommendation to BBL clubs not to promote Australia Day games as such, despite criticism from Prime Minister Scott Morrison. "Suffering is not a competition. What the prime minister has said makes no sense", he said.

"How can we expect to see real progress on issues such as reconciliation and closing the gap when he makes such ignorant and unhelpful comments like this?"

Critics online called the remarks "tone-deaf" and "insulting", while others pointed out that 11 not 12 ships had arrived in the British fleet at Sydney Cove.

'Luckily our prime minister doesn't have an electorate connected with this event, ' Mr Perrett said sarcastically.

The 26th of January will feature three BBL games: Brisbane Heat vs Perth Scorchers, Hobart Hurricanes vs Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars vs Sydney Sixers.

Australia Day has only been consistently celebrated on 26 January since 1994.

Cricket Australia's First Nation's Advisory Committee which is co-chaired by CA board member and former worldwide Mel Jones, made a series of recommendations which included not making reference to 'Australia Day'.

Cricket Australia Diversity and Inclusion manager Adam Cassidy said the aim is to draw a balance between supporting Indigenous communities without making drastic moves like stopping cricket on January 26. "Obviously it's a bit of a challenge when you have matches being played on a day of mourning for a lot of people".

CA are well aware the issue is a sensitive one and are desperate for it not to prove divisive, but want to encourage talk about the issue.

Morrison's government has since changed the words of the anthem, removing a reference to the country being "young and free", amid concerns the existing wording overlooks the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that stretches back tens of thousands of years.

"Everyone is going to have an opinion on this as they do for a variety of different things", Jones told the Australian Associated Press.
