The Washington Capitals have been fined $100,000 for violation of the NHL's COVID-19 protocols, the league announced Wednesday.

The Capitals were one of two teams, along with Montreal, to not have an update regarding COVID protocol related absences on the NHL's official manifest Wednesday.

"We are disappointed by our players' choice to interact in their hotel room and outside of team-approved areas", the club said in a statement.

Being listed doesn't necessarily mean the players tested positive.

The NHL said the fine was in response to "player violations" of league protocols, including "social interactions among team members who were in close contact and who were not wearing face coverings", but did not elaborate on which players were involved. No more context is known at the time, but it is very clear the National Hockey League is not playing around with teams and players who violate the protocols.

The team added a note of its own: "Our training staff has worked extremely hard to create a safe environment for our players and staff to be able to compete this season".

The Capitals were off on Wednesday (it was a previously scheduled off day) after playing Tuesday night in Pittsburgh.

"As an appropriate precaution, the team's training facilities have been closed, effective immediately, and will remain closed for Players until further notice", the National Hockey League said in a written statement.

Washington has played four games so far, going 2-0-2. The league's statement said the team has followed recommended health and safety guidelines.

Their past five games have been postponed during a stretch in which six Wizards players tested positive for the illness caused by the coronavirus and three others were sidelined after contact tracing determined they might have been exposed.
