Game of Thrones ‘Dunk & Egg’ Prequel in Development at HBO

For the unfamiliar, Tales of Dunk and Egg is made up of three novellas: 1998's "The Hedge Knight", 2003's "The Sworn Sword" and 2010's "The Mystery Knight".

Martin's novellas take place close to a century before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire, chronicling the travels of hedge (or errant) knight Ser Duncan the Tall, the titular "Dunk", and Prince Aegon V Targaryen a.k.a. "Egg".

But like those A Song Of Ice And Fire novels, the Tales Of Dunk And Egg series of novellas aren't finished yet so that means the show will have to make up an ending based of George R.R. Martin's notes should it get to that point.

You might remember some discussion of Egg in the original show, as Maester Aemon mentioned him on his deathbed.

Fans of Game of Thrones will likely be all too familiar with Aegon's lineage as he eventually comes to father Aerys Targaryen, better known to most as the Mad King. According to Variety, another "Game of Thrones" (GoT) prequel set in the world of Westeros is now in development with HBO. So if we did Dunk & Egg with anyone else, we would need to remove all the references to House Targaryen, the Iron Throne, etc...not completely impossible, but certainly undesirable. The community is presently prepping the collection "Home of the Dragon", which is slated to debut in 2022. One other "Sport of Thrones" prequel written by Jane Goldman and starring Naomi Watts went to pilot at HBO however was finally handed over in 2019.

So, we can presumably expect a few decent fight and battle scenes in those episodes, given that is sort of his thing. Their adventures get off to a rocky start - and many a "clout in the ear" when Dunk determines that Egg is misbehaving - but the two develop a brotherly bond over time.

As of yet, no talent has been matched up to this project, nor anyone reported to be writing the series.

No writer or talent is now attached to the project, but sources say it is a high priority for HBO as the premium cabler looks to build on the success of "Game of Thrones".
