HSBC said it had begun trialing different branch formats and chose to provide fewer full service branches focused in large cities and towns, with others providing cash or self-service technology. HSBC paused job cuts in March after the coronavirus pandemic emerged, but they were later restarted and the bank said in October it expected about 10,000 jobs would go in 2020.

HSBC will close 82 out of its 593 branches in the United Kingdom this year after a surge in digital banking and a commensurate drop in footfall across its retail network due to the pandemic's effects.

Past year the group revealed a major restructuring plan, where it announced plans to cut 35,000 jobs globally.

The number of customers using its branches has fallen by a third in the last five years, HSBC said.

However, HSBC aims to redeploy the vast majority of staff to nearby branches and does not expect any redundancies from the move.

TSB chief executive Debbie Crosbie said: "Closing any of our branches is never an easy decision, but our customers are banking differently - with a marked shift to digital banking".

"The Covid-19 pandemic has emphasised the need for the changes that we are making".

HSBC is streamlining its operations, closing 82 branches and saying that customers can go to branches elsewhere or the local Post Office to carry out transactions if they can't do online banking.

"It hasn't pushed us in a different direction but reinforces the things that we were focusing on before and has crystallised our thinking".

"Making sure we have a sustainable branch network is essential to us, and decisions to close branches are not taken lightly".
