Health officials say 1,735 more people have recovered from COVID-19, for a total of 221,327; they say there are 18,253 active reported cases of the disease across the province.

In explaining the seriousness of their concerns, Quebec's public health officials have pointed to other countries such as the United Kingdom, where a variant that's circulating in the country is responsible for a spike in cases and in hospitalizations.

"I find it very unfortunate to see certain people try to divide us, trying to say that there are good guys and bad guys, that there are some who care for the homeless and some that don't care".

In the meantime, Legault said he wants the federal government to do more to ensure that people returning from other countries quarantine for 14 days.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged Canadians to cancel any plans they have for global trips in the near future.

Speaking to media on Tuesday afternoon, Quebec Premier François Legault said that he has asked the Federal Government to ban all non-essential global flights in order to prevent the spread of a growing number of COVID-19 variants.

Trudeau has urged travellers to avoid and cancel all non-essential travel, and warned Canadians this week that the rules around travel could change with no notice, but Ottawa hasn't banned non-essential travel.

As a result, Legault said, surgeries that have been postponed can not be rescheduled just yet - the strain on the system is too great.

Legault repeated his call for the federal government to ban non-essential flights to Canada. In March, Montreal public health officials and city police were sent to Montreal-Trudeau International Airport to encourage arriving travellers to self-isolate. The federal government said Canada won't get any doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine next week. While the pacing of vaccination is likely to slow down in the coming weeks due to a reduction in supply from Pfizer, Dubé said that the province is still confident it can reach 225,000 doses administered by February 8, a target that has been revised from the original 250,000.

According to Health Minister Christian Dubé more than 80 per cent of CHSLD residents and employees across the province have already received a vaccination dose, with the rest on track to do so by the end of the week. But the premier said the number of hospitalizations will have to come down before he considers lifting restrictions.

The majority of the new cases were reported in Montreal and neighbouring regions.
