Governor General Julie Payette is resigning, according to a source with direct knowledge of her decision but not authorized to discuss it publicly confirms to The Canadian Press.
Payette said not only did she welcome a review of the workplace climate of the Governor General's office, but she also "repeatedly encouraged employees to participate in the review in large numbers".
That review began after multiple current and former staff accused the Governor General and her second in command of bullying and verbal harassment to the point where some staff were brought to tears or left their jobs.
The Privy Council Office revealed a year ago that Quintet Consulting Corp. had been hired to conduct a third-party investigation.
Payette, a former astronaut, was appointed as the representative for the Queen in 2017.
He explained the government takes all allegations seriously, and all employees have the right to work in a safe environment.
"Julie Payette ought to have resigned months ago when so many negative media reports appeared about her behavior", Wiseman said.
Payette's appointment was controversial from the outset. She was also involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident that same year. The case was closed without charges after a police investigation.

However, the reality star hasn't given up on finding love. "It hasn't been ideal circumstances, but that is life right", she said. Following the news, a source told PEOPLE that Moss was not ready to take the next steps in the relationship.
"While no formal complaints or official grievances were made during my tenure, which would have immediately triggered a detailed investigation as prescribed by law and the collective agreements in place, I still take these allegations very seriously", Payette explained. "I wish to extend my thanks to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his trust and for offering me this incredible opportunity".
During an interview on RED FM's The Harjinder Thind Show in Vancouver in September he said she was excellent.
For now, that means Chief Justice Richard Wagner will grant royal assent to bills and handle other administrative matters.
"Considering the problems with his last appointment and the minority Parliament, the prime minister should consult opposition parties and re-establish the viceregal appointments committee", he said in a statement.
Trudeau said the Chief Justice of Canada will be fulfilling the duties of the Governor General in the interim.
"A recommendation on a replacement will be provided to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and announced in due course, " Trudeau said.
But upon forming government in 2015, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau abandoned that approach and moved the selection process inside his office.
