Former Houston Texans and Penn State Nittany Lions coach Bill O'Brien has been hired by Nick Saban to lead the Crimson Tide offense in 2021 as well as the team's quarterbacks coach, announced school Thursday.

Saban was in need of a new offensive coordinator after Steve Sarkisian left Alabama in favor of accepting the head coaching job at Texas. Bill is one of football's brightest offensive minds, an exceptional teacher and a great recruiter. It will strengthen our coaching staff and give our players the best chance for success.

O'Brien led the Texans to the playoffs four times and was elevated to the role of general manager in January.

O'Brien, who will also serve as the team's QB coach, returns to college football after he was sacked by the Texans during their disastrous 2020 season. He went 15-9 in two seasons for Penn State, earning some national coach of the year recognition in 2012, before being hired as the Houston Texans' head coach in 2014. I look forward to being able to work with some of the best soccer players in the country, while helping to continue the success of this program for many years.

Bill O'Brien is getting ready to join an exclusive club - football coaches who have worked for both Bill Belichick and Nick Saban.

With O'Brien's hire, Alabama and Saban are handing the offense to yet another high-profile coach who's coming off a rocky tenure elsewhere. He won the Paul "Bear" Bryant Award and Maxwell Coach of the Year after an 8-4 campaign in the first season since the departure of Joe Paterno. It was the most wins by a first-year coach in the program's previous 125 seasons.

O'Brien will work with an offensive coaching staff that remains unsettled after offensive line coach Kyle Flood and tight ends coach Jeff Banks followed Sarkisian to Texas, while running backs coach Charles Huff became Marshall's head coach.

A 28-year coaching veteran and former Brown defensive player, O'Brien was also offensive coordinator at Duke. He joined the New England Patriots' staff in 2007 and began calling plays in 2009, although he was not officially promoted to offensive coordinator until 2011.

The Board of Trustees still must formally approve the financial terms, which have not been disclosed.
