Reports in Spain have claimed Odegaard has grown exhausted of the situation under Zidane in Madrid, but with the Frenchman's long-term future as manager in danger following Real's humiliating Copa del Rey defeat at minnows Alcoyano on Wednesday night, it's nearly certain the youngster will use the loan move to stake a claim to a starting berth at the Bernabeu next season.
Odegaard spent a fruitful loan spell at Sociedad last season, and it was expected that he would join them this month.
The club face stiff competition from several clubs including Real Sociedad and Sevilla but are confident of winning the race after agreeing to Madrid's terms which included no option to buy the 22-year-old at the end of the season.
What then made that track more serious is Diario Vasco, the local newspaper for the Basque club, admitting defeat and themselves declaring Odegaard wouldn't be signing for Real Sociedad, but Arsenal instead. He has struggled for regular games this season, and a move away from Los Blancos makes a lot of sense.
The Daily Mail report that Arsenal's technical director Edu began negotiations last week to sign the Norwegian playmaker.

Rest assured that something similar is nearly guaranteed to happen with the Ø if, as is now being widely reported, Martin Ødegaard completes a shock six-month loan switch to The Emirates.
Martin Odegaard has agreed to join Arsenal on loan from Real Madrid following talks with Mikel Arteta and the deal should be announced shortly, according to various reports today.
