  • A Tacoma police cruiser runs over a street-racing crowd after being surrounded

A video shows a large group of people surrounding the police auto as it revs its engine in an apparent effort to drive off.

A disturbing event from Saturday led to at least one person in the hospital.

The Tacoma police statement said a crowd had surrounded the police auto and began to "hit the body of the police vehicle and its windows".

The crowd then surrounded one of the police vehicles and began hitting the vehicle and its windows while its lights and sirens were activated, according to police.

"The officer, fearing for his safety, tried to back up, but was unable to do so because of the crowd", it said.

Tacoma Police spokeswoman Wendy Haddow said police were alerted to the street racers and a 100-person crowd blocking area streets, according to the News Tribune.

One witness told the Tribune, "A lot of people swarmed in that direction (of the police car) ..."

"Tacoma Police officers responding to the location began clearing the intersection of vehicles and people for the safety of those gathered and people trying to use the street", the police department stated.

She added if there was a vote on Irish unity, the arguments for the union are "rational, logical, and they will win through". She said most people in Northern Ireland wanted politicians to "settle down" and deal with the pandemic.

The vehicle revs its engine and surges forward, driving into the crowd and running over several people before driving away.

The incident was captured in a 48-second video, which has since been widely shared on social media. "He was afraid they would break his glass", she said, prompting him to speed away from the scene.

Based on the thorough process of becoming a police officer, the officer involved in Saturday's incident should have had a wider range of skills and options to resolve the issue.

"While trying to extricate himself from an unsafe position, the officer drove forward striking one individual and may have impacted others", the press release states.

Police officers in general should not be allowed to continue using the excuse of "fearing for their lives" to justify their actions in a given situation. "That person's condition is, at this time, unknown".

City Manager Elizabeth Pauli told the News Tribune that the officer driving the vehicle would be placed on leave.

Tacoma's interim Police Chief Mike Ake, also commented on the incident.

The incident has been turned over to the Pierce County Force Investigation Team, which will conduct an independent review, police said.
