Australia approves Pfizer Covid 19 vaccine for emergency use

  • Australia's First Coronavirus Vaccine Has Been Approved For Mass Use

Pfizer's vaccine met safety, efficacy and quality standards and has been approved for people aged 16 and older, the TGA said.

Of the two proposed boxes, the larger 12-litre version is capable of storing 5000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at up to minus 70 degrees celsius for 18 days by packing it with 34 kilograms of dry ice.

The approval has been noted as "provisional", meaning it is now only valid for two years.

The rollout will be aimed at 30 - 50 hospital sites and will focus on high-risk individuals, including those in aged care, as well as workers in disability care, frontline health care, quarantine and border.

Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine is the first to be approved for use in Australia.

Minister for Health Greg Hunt also backed the approval, saying "The TGA's processes are I believe the best in the world and we have ensured that they are thorough".

"Our priority has always been to keep Australians safe and to protect lives and livelihoods".

The news agency quoted Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison as saying that the country's medical regulator was one of the first in the world to complete a comprehensive approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

Morrison cautioned that the rollout would start with "very small beginnings" in late February, instead of the mid-February timetable his government had promised, due to production and delivery challenges globally.

He added: "We may well be in a situation where we have to have an annual coronavirus vaccine much like we do with the flu vaccine, but the public should be reassured that these technologies are relatively easy to edit and tweak, so once we find strains that are predominant, the vaccines can be altered".

"The prime minister past year was saying that Australia was at the front of the queue - that's not true", he said.

The two-dose regimen could not be imported into Australia until it was approved by the TGA and today's announcement means millions of doses of the drug can now be shipped from overseas.

Mr Morrison said the vaccination rollout would not immediately lead to a relaxation of restrictions around worldwide travel, social distancing or masks.

Opposition leader Anthony Albanese on Monday questioned whether the federal government is on track to meet its commitment of vaccinating four million people by the end of March.

Finally, ScoMo also confirmed that there is still "far more to learn" about the vaccine, as we don't now know its full effects on the human body. In other countries such as the United Kingdom and US, the vaccines have been approved on an "interim" basis, without the full analysis and review that more commonly takes place.

"The TGA has placed safety above all else". Some of the more commonly heard of vaccines such as Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca are already being distributed.
