  • Tennis pro Yastremska denied in bid to lift suspensionUkraine's Dayana Yastremska makes a forehand return

Dayana Yastremska's appeal against a doping suspension has been rejected. "An application by Dayana Yastremska to lift the provisional suspension imposed on her on 7 January 2021 under Article 8.3.1 (c) of the 2020 Tennis Anti-Doping Programme has been denied by the Chair of the Independent Tribunal convened to hear her case", the statement read.

She spent two weeks in self-isolation in Dubai after testing positive for COVID-19.

It's left the Ukrainian locked in a Melbourne hotel with seemingly no remaining chance of competing at the Australian Open - and many questioning how she came to be on the TA-funded flight.

"This decision is subject to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport by Ms. Yastremska, WADA and the National Anti-Doping Center of Ukraine".

A urine sample Yastremska gave on 24 November contained a metabolite of mesterolone, a synthetic testosterone.

She has denied using performance-enhancing drugs, saying she believes the positive test is the result of a "contamination event", and has vowed to clear her name.

"I'm astonished and under shock, particularly given that two weeks prior to this test ..."

"Only a very low concentration of mesterolone metabolite was detected in my urine", Yastremska added. Despite the suspension, Yastremska flew to Australia, hoping her application would be successfull and she would be allowed to play at the Australian Open.

Yastremska was among nearly 1300 players and support crew that came on chartered flights to Australia, where they face 14 days of quarantine ahead of the Open's delayed start date of February 8.

He has since returned a negative test and has no symptoms, but with a 14-day quarantine on arrival has run out of time and will join Andy Murray as the second men's withdrawal due to the virus.
