Google Pay Redesign Focuses on Organizing, Protecting Your Money

It's important that your money and private information are safe and in your control.

Under the banking collaborations, Google will primarily provide the front-end experience and insight via the Pay app while the banks provide the financial backing, FDIC insurance and transactional infrastructure. Foreign payment apps like Google Pay and Whatsapp Pay would pose as great competitors but would still have to go the extra mile to win the Kenyan market. Google Pay will need to do more in terms of development to retain its clients as both apps run on the same protocol. Instead of cards, your Google Pay account will be broken up into three groups: People, Groups, and Businesses. With hygiene becoming a high priority for many people, we want to make sure that we continue to deliver innovative solutions for touch-free payments. The search giant has revamped the app to expand Google Pay's offerings beyond digital peer-to-peer transactions, joining a list of big tech companies that continue to edge further into personal financial services.

Where it gets pretty unique, though, is in its ability to break things up into conversations.

Since its debut in 2015, Google Pay has amassed 150 million users in 30 countries with people mostly relying on the service to send money to friends or for online shopping.

You can even create group "chats" to easily split a bill at the restaurant or the monthly rent with your roommates. Now, if you use Google Pay to buy stuff or even pay for bills you can earn rewards - though details on these rewards are currently slim. Equally, it may take time for participating merchants to come on stream because although Google Pay is accepted wherever contact payments are, some businesses are a bit slow to adopt it, so it's best to carry a back-up card, at least for now.

Manage your money + See the total balance from all of your accounts in one payment app, so you'll always know exactly what's coming in and what's going out. Our current favorite is the Plum app. And, yes, you can send text messages too. To redeem an offer from popular stores such as Target, Burger King, Etsy, and more-tap the promotion, make a purchase, and the discount will be automatically applied at checkout. If it's connected to a bank account, it will give you a summary at the end of the month, including trends in your spending. You'll get a digital Mastercard debit card instantly and a physical contactless card upon request. All data uploaded is cryptographically protected and the retailer will be shown a dummy card number when you pay (a process called "tokenisation"), making it impossible to skim your credentials. PLEX will live inside Google Pay and is the first-ever dedicated bank account facility offered by Google.
