Indian, Chinese soldiers clash at Sikkim border, both sides suffer injuries

Indian Army soldiers pushed back troops from the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) near Naku La in the Sikkim sector on January 20.

While both sides have placed air and land defences along the boundary that separates them, they have also engaged in peace talks.

The latest de-escalation talks between military commanders were held Sunday but there have been no signs that either side is ready to back down. Last month, India and China held another round of diplomatic talks under the framework of Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on India-China border affairs.

Other than Srivastava, the Indian delegation will include Lt Gen PGK Menon (GOC 14 Corps); Deepam Seth, IG North West Frontier, ITBP; Brig Rajiv Ghai (Army HQ, Delhi); Maj Gen Sanjay Mitra (GOC 39 Div); Maj Gen RS Raman, Brig HS Gill and others.

Chinese products are being halted in customs logjams at Indian ports.

Sources said that India would focus and insist China to implement the five-point agreement decided between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi at a meeting in Moscow in September previous year, on the sidelines of a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) conclave.

The soldiers of both countries remain deployed at the site after clashes.

After a gap of over two-and-half months, the Indian and Chinese armies on Sunday held another round of Corps Commander-level talks with an aim to move forward on disengagement of troops from all friction points in eastern Ladakh, sources said.

The eight Corps Commander level talks had taken place happened on November 6. China claimed its soldier had gone missing "due to darkness and complicated terrain".
