President Joe Biden plans to sign restrictions Monday on travel to the United States to mitigate Covid-19 transmission, two White House officials confirmed Sunday.
The ban, which will take effect from Saturday [January 30], has been introduced to contain the spread of the new COVID-19 variant that had been identified in South Africa, a senior United States public health official confirmed to Reuters. The limits would affect non-U.S. citizens traveling from the United Kingdom, Ireland and much of Europe in what is known as the Schengen countries, which share a common visa process.
Ramaphosa said that vaccines would arrive "soon", adding that government has been working, both through multilateral initiatives and direct negotiations with manufacturers, to ensure South Africa can make the best use of vaccines when they become available.
Biden is reversing an order from President Donald Trump in his final days in office that called for the relaxation of the travel restrictions as of Tuesday.
Biden's order rescinds that decision, marking the new administration's more stringent approach to coronavirus policies moving forward. It also follows early signs that Biden planned to turn back Trump's attempts to open USA borders to foreign travelers amidst the still-raging pandemic.

Just over a year after the first US -based coronavirus case was detected, the nation surpassed a harrowing pandemic milestone on Sunday: 25 million confirmed cases, according to data from Johns Hopkins University's Coronavirus Resource Center.
A six-fold reduction in antibody levels was observed with the B.1.351 variant first seen in South Africa, but the levels are thought to remain above what is required for protection against Covid-19.
Principal deputy director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Dr. Anne Schuchat told Reuters: "We are adding South Africa to the restricted list because of the concerning variant present that has already spread beyond South Africa". Trump's move was made in conjunction with a new requirement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that all global travelers to the USA obtain a negative test for COVID-19 within three days of boarding their flight.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Sunday that, beginning Tuesday, it will no longer consider exceptions to its requirement that global travelers present negative coronavirus tests. Airlines had asked the agency to relax the rule for some countries with limited testing capacity.
