  • New Zealand confirms first COVID-19 case in months sparking Australia travel halt

In a statement, Air New Zealand, which operates quarantine-free flights between Auckland and Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and transiting flights through Norfolk Island, said the news would impact five services in the next 72 hours.

The Australian government has suspended its travel bubble with New Zealand for 72 hours after the discovery of a concerning South African coronavirus variant.

Hunt said Australia had no criticism of the person concerned or New Zealand's handling of the case.

Mr Hunt said anyone who has travelled to Australia from New Zealand since 14 January should remain at home in isolation and arrange to get tested.

The woman is confirmed to have the South African variant of coronavirus.

Australia and New Zealand were among the first countries in the Asia-Pacific region to loosen restrictions on worldwide travel since Covid-19 travel bans came into effect earlier this year.

"I don't think that's peculiar to this variant, it's just how it was expressed in this woman".

"We are working under the assumptions that this is a positive case and that it is a more transmissible variant, either the one identified first in South Africa or the United Kingdom, or potentially Brazil - or another transmissible variant", Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield told a news conference.

New Zeland's Health Minister Hipkins said: 'This woman concerned has been scrupulous in keeping a good record of her movements, scanning the QR codes wherever she has gone. They are one of the world's best contact tracing systems.

The new community case in New Zealand - the country's first for 67 days - marks the first time one of the new, more risky variants of COVID-19 has wriggled past our border.

The country's total number of confirmed cases is 1927, with 25 deaths recorded since the disease arrived on Kiwi soil in February previous year.

The B.1.351 strain, first discovered in Nelson Mandela Bay in October 2020, is caused by a series of mutations of the virus's spike protein.

But it is one mutation in particular - known as E484K and present in the variants from South Africa and Brazil - that has experts anxious about immunity "escape".

"Importantly the person has been vigilant in using the COVID Tracer app since leaving MIF and we have been able to rapidly identify these locations and are in the process of notifying them".

They found it was resistant to neutralising antibodies built up from prior infection, meaning that it could also defy immunity provided by jabs. But with the pandemic raging globally, more people are returning with infections, including the new variants, raising concerns the virus may spread in the community again.
