Ontario reports 2,417 new cases of COVID-19

Since the pandemic began, there have been 255,002 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario.

ICES provided an overview of the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of individuals in Ontario who tested and confirmed positive for COVID-19 during the week of January 10 to 16.

Now eleven days into a second state of emergency and stay-at-home order, officials said there were 24,153 known active cases of novel coronavirus infection across the province.

Ontario reports 181 new COVID-related hospitalizations and 41 new admissions to intensive care.

The seven-day average number of new cases now stands at 2,460.

There are 392 COVID patients in intensive care units (down from 395 yesterday) and 301 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 299 yesterday).

The 2,359 infections mark a drop over Friday's report when 2,662 cases were added and bring the province's COVID-19 case total to 252,585, including deaths and recoveries.

Meanwhile, as supply issues grip the province, the number of new COVID-19 vaccines administered fell sharply from 15,000 per day earlier this week to only 4,427 in the past 24 hours.

Half of the deaths reported Sunday involved residents of the long-term care system.

In Simcoe-Muskoka the weekly incidence rate was 76.9 cases per 100,000 people for the week of Jan. 13 to Jan. 19, which is a decrease of 3.5 per cent compared to the week of Jan. 7 to Jan. 13 when the rate was 79.7 cases per 100,000 people.

According to ICES' data, Peel had the highest percent positivity (11.7%) out of all of Ontario's 34 Public Health Units, followed by Toronto and Windsor-Essex County.

The Ontario government has declared a state of emergency, the second since the start of the pandemic, and a stay at-home order is in effect until at least February 11, 2021.
