  • Criticized by science community and Trump, Deborah Birx said she ‘always’ considered quitting

When asked about President Joe Biden's executive orders on the pandemic, Birx said, "I was an N of 1". Dr. Birx never does explain, in her interview, why she never came forward at the time to say that false information was being presented.

Mr Trump appreciated the gravity of the virus in March, but the White House didn't follow her "gated criteria" on lockdowns later, as the country gradually reopened months ahead of the presidential election.

Dr Birx described the difficulties of delivering science-based recommendations to the White House, where some people believed the coronavirus was a hoax, she said.

Defending her tenure, Birx tells CBS's "Face the Nation" that she was at times censored by the Trump administration, but denies ever withholding information.

Birx said that she didn't know at the time who exactly was bringing the parallel data to the president, but that looking back, she now believed that Scott Atlas had provided some of the data.

Dr Birx said she would see Mr Trump "presenting graphs that I never made" and that "someone out there or someone inside was creating a parallel set of data and graphics that were shown to the president".

Dr. Deborah Birx made public appearances throughout 2020 as an advisor to the Trump Administration on pandemic response.

Birx said, "That's what I was given. It is also why I went out on the road, because I wasn't censured on the road". I know what that feels like from just listening to my grandmother. "When you're put into a new situation and you only know one person in the White House, you know, and you don't understand the culture of the White House, it's very hard to get your footing", Birx said.

Efforts to vaccinate the public have been plagued by delays while a new and more contagious variant of coronavirus that originated in Britain has been identified in at least 20 states.

On Thursday, the first full day of his presidency, Biden released a 198-page Covid-19 strategy.

Despite a mass vaccination program in the USA, case numbers have risen to more than 25 million. Such efforts combined with people getting vaccinated and adhering to public health guidance, he said, could allow the United States to control the pandemic.

"It is very important to me that we all agree how the data is collected and how we use it".

Biden's nominee for health secretary, Xavier Becerra, warned that improving the pandemic response "won't happen overnight".

"I understood that to go into the White House and try to support a comprehensive coronavirus response by utilizing the strength of the federal government would be a terminal event for my federal career, which is part of the reason why I didn't want to do it", Birx said in Sunday's interview.

She said she will retire "within the next four to six weeks". They saw people get COVID and be fine.
