UK's COVID-19 variant is more deadlier than the original one?

  • New coronavirus variant may be more deadly, but more evidence is needed, U.K.'s chief scientist says

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated on Friday that there was "some evidence" to indicate that the new coronavirus strain found in December 2020 in England is not only more infectious, but "may be associated with a higher degree of mortality", one of many contradictory statements from top officials on the new variant over the past month.

"It should be noted that the absolute risk of death per infection remains low", the NERVTAG team wrote in the paper.

Johnson defined in a press convention that due to the influence of this new variant, the British public well being system (NHS) is "beneath elevated stress", though he added that the vaccines which are being administered in the United Kingdom appear to be efficient towards each strains (the unique and the British) in the opinion of scientists.

Meanwhile, Hancock expressed his concerns over the new Covid-19 variants not yet discovered.

Johnson, however, noted that the vaccines now in use were effective against the old and new coronavirus variants.

Ian Jones, professor of Virology at the University of Reading, said "the data is limited and the conclusions preliminary".

India records 14,545 new COVID-19 cases in last 24 hours
According to the health ministry, the number of recovered patients has overtaken active cases by more than 55 times. Kerala reported the maximum daily new cases numbering 6,960 in the last 24 hours.

United Kingdom still "long, long, long way off" lifting lockdown restrictions, Hancock says
Delivering the latest vaccine news, Mr Hancock said 75% of all people aged 80 and over have now had their first coronavirus jab. We have got to watch the data".

The R number, which estimates the growth rate of the pandemic, now sits at between 0.8 and 1 - suggesting the virus may be on the decline as lockdown begins to take effect.

"At the moment we are not alarmed about that", Collins said, given that vaccines still appeared effective against it. "I want to point out that there is a lot of uncertainty around these numbers", he said, "and we need more work to get a clear picture, but it is obviously worrying that this results in an increase in mortality".

Asked if the public were left wondering what to believe on the new Covid strain, he replied: 'No I don't think that's the case for the vast majority of the public actually. The corresponding statement was made by Prime Minister Boris Johnson at a press conference. What really matters is that everybody follows them and the reason for that is not just the death toll each day which is far too high but also because the pressure on the NHS - including from people who thankfully come out of hospital alive - the pressure on the NHS is enormous and that has knock-on consequences for people who suffer from all other illnesses. Pubs, restaurants, entertainment venues and many shops are closed, and people are required to stay largely at home.

The number of new infections has begun to fall, but deaths remain agonizingly high, averaging more than 1,000 a day, and the number of hospitalized patients is 80% higher than at the first peak of the pandemic in the spring.

Mr Johnson, who has often been accused of giving overly optimistic predictions about relaxing coronavirus restrictions, sounded gloomy. We let you know the main points. "It's going to be around, probably, forever".
