"Today's orders suggest that the court is increasingly willing to invoke this doctrine to avoid highly charged political disputes, even if the mootness wasn't caused by the parties that won below". The move came just days after Mr. Trump formally left office and is no longer a government official.

He was accused of violating the country's Constitution's anti-corruption provisions. It leaves unresolved a novel question raised in the case because Trump, unlike other presidents, did not use a blind trust when he assumed the presidency, but instead continued to retain an interest in his businesses and let those businesses to take money from foreign and domestic governments.

The US Supreme Court has brought an end to lawsuits over whether Donald Trump illegally profited from his presidency.

The Supreme Court ultimately threw out the lower court cases and asked for ongoing appeals court cases to be thrown out as well, arguing that the lawsuits are pointless now that Trump is no longer President.

Supreme Court dismisses emolument cases against Trump

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals at NY resurrected the case in September 2019.

The cases involved suits filed by Maryland and the District of Columbia, and high-end restaurants and hotels in NY and Washington, DC, that "found themselves in the unenviable position of having to compete with businesses owned by the President of the United States".

A 2020 decision by the Richmond, Virginia-based 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals allowed the similar lawsuit by the District of Columbia and Maryland to proceed. That suit focused on the Trump International Hotel in Washington, which became a favored lodging and event space for some foreign and state officials visiting Washington.

Trump had previously challenged rulings by lower courts allowing him to be sued for the allegations, alleging that a sitting President can not be sued for this matter.
