Major League Soccer announces plans to start 2021 season April 3

With all the uncertainty around the ongoing collective bargaining agreement negotiations between MLS and the Major League Soccer Players Union, those two dates give a more concrete timeline for both sides to work off during negotiations, rather than the January 28 deadline for reaching an agreement that was set by the league.

The regular season is set to wrap up November 7, followed by MLS Cup Playoffs running from November 19 through the MLS Cup on December 11.

MLS had originally targeted a mid-March start date, but a source with knowledge of the situation said that when the CONCACAF Champions League would start in April, that gave MLS additional flexibility to delay the start of the regular season by two weeks.

Players reporting to preseason will undergo a mandatory quarantine and train individually before.

Teams can begin preseason camps on February 22, six weeks ahead of the start of the regular season. The Major League Soccer Players Union countered that it would not be rushed into negotiations.

MLS will see the opening of three new stadiums for Austin FC, FC Cincinnati, and the Columbus Crew SC. There will be 13 teams in the Western Conference and 14 in the East.

The news comes amid an ongoing negotiation between the league and the MLS Players Association to amend the collective bargaining agreement that was ratified last summer. The date of the league's All-Star game has not been set.

"Although no agreement has been reached, MLS is committed to meet as many times as necessary with the MLSPA in the coming days to finalize an agreement".

The full season schedule will be released in the coming weeks, the league said. Until further notice, teams also will take chartered flights for all road trips.
