Celtic accept offer for Frimpong

The imminent transfer of Jeremie Frimpong to Bayer Leverkusen is set to free up cash for Celtic in the final days of the January window. "We offered him a new deal which would have kept him here for another two or three years, but it was down to the player's personal ambition".

"He's come in for £300,000 and we could sell him for a huge amount of money, so it's credit to the development of the player and what the coaches and the club have done for him that a couple of top European clubs have shown an interest".

Earlier today, Celtic manager Neil Lennon confirmed that Frimpong was overseas negotiating with a club. That deal looks like it may go through.

"I feel a bit let down because we felt we could progress him further", Lennon said. We offered the player talks for a new deal a few months back, but he declined and made it clear that he wanted to leave, despite our best efforts to keep him. Ambitious maybe, or he wanted to try something else to progress his career.

It is unclear how much Celtic have been offered for the promising full-back, with Lennon saying: "We received a really robust offer for him, we are disappointed to lose him but that's football".

"That's football sometimes, when a player makes it clear that he would prefer to go elsewhere then you have to look at it and think is this the right thing to do, is this the right sort of deal for us and ticks all the boxes really".

"Negotiations are ongoing at the minute and will see how that pans out, but I don't envisage anyone else going out the door". We did everything we could to try and entice the player to stay.
