United Kingdom passes 100000 coronavirus deaths as outbreak still rages

MORE THAN 100,000 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in Britain since the pandemic took hold past year, official data has shown.

The health department says 100,162 people have died after testing positive, including 1,631 new deaths reported Tuesday.

The 100,162 deaths are more than the country's civilian toll in World War II and twice the number killed in the 1940-41 Blitz bombing campaign.

An ashen-faced Prime Minister Boris Johnson told a news conference just minutes after the official statistics were published that it was "hard to compute" the loss felt by families across the UK.

"Of course we will learn lessons in due course and of course there will be a time to reflect and to prepare for the next pandemic", Johnson said last week.

England, by far the most populous of the UK's four nations, re-entered a national lockdown on January 5, which includes the closure of pubs, restaurants, non-essential shops and schools to most pupils. Further travel restrictions have been introduced as the government battles to speed up vaccination delivery and keep variants of the virus at bay.

Together, these totals mean that so far 115,782 deaths involving Covid-19 have taken place in the UK.

Meanwhile, Britain is speeding up its vaccine distribution with more than 6.8 million people receiving their first dose of vaccine and more than 472,000 receiving both doses as of Monday.

Although case numbers have fallen over the past week, Chris Whitty, the government's chief medical officer, warned on Friday that the peak in deaths of the current wave was still "in the future". Johnson's Conservative government is accused by many scientists of waiting too long to impose a lockdown in March as infections were rising exponentially.

Britain is due to announce whether it will also bring in mandatory quarantine in hotels for some or all arrivals and has warned the public not to book summer vacations.
