Australian PM Morrison gets COVID-19 vaccine in "massive step" toward normal

The first person to get the vaccine in Melbourne was Monash Health medical director for infection prevention Rhonda Stuart, who got her first dose first thing this morning.

"This is a curtain raiser", Mr Morrison told reporters on Sunday.

"And she's taking part in what is a very historic day for our country".

Australia has been relatively successful in containing the virus to date, with nearly 29,000 cases and 909 deaths in a population of 25 million.

The prime minister joined the Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly and the Chief Nursing Officer Alison McMillan getting vaccinated as well as healthcare workers.

"That it is safe, that it's important, and we need to start with those who are most vulnerable and on the frontline".

Health Minister Greg Hunt said vaccines were being prioritised "so those most at risk, and those most vulnerable, can get access first". Anthony Albanese, the leader of the Opposition Labor Party, will receive vaccines within days.

More than 200 million doses have already been administered internationally and its benefits are already being observed.

Facebook restricted access to Australian news content last week in response to the federal government's proposed media bargaining code.

However it also temporarily blocked the pages of health and emergency services agencies, prompting government accusations that it was damaging its own credibility.
