The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of AstraZeneca, Pascal Soriot, has expressed delight that the first doses of the vaccine produced by the Serum Institute of India has been delivered.

On Thursday (25 February), the CEOs of all vaccine manufacturing companies gathered virtually at the European Parliament to discuss with MEPs how to increase the capacity and improve deliveries of COVID-19 shots.

The pace of Europe's vaccine rollout has fallen dramatically behind that of the United Kingdom, partly because millions of people are reportedly refusing to take the AstraZeneca vaccine due to widespread mistrust of the AstraZeneca vaccine after European leaders cast doubt on its effectiveness.

The shortfall could hamper the EU's plans to meet its goal of vaccinating 70% of adults by late summer.

The EU official, who is directly involved in talks with the Anglo-Swedish drugmaker, said the company had told the bloc during internal meetings that it "would deliver less than 90 million doses in the second quarter".

The spokesperson said: "AstraZeneca confirms today [Wednesday] that its most recent Q2 forecast for the delivery of its COVID-19 vaccine aims to deliver in line with its contract with the European Commission".

For the first three months of the year, AZ committed 80 million doses of its COVID vaccine, but its European supply chain didn't produce as much yield as initially expected, leading the company to cut deliveries to around 30 million doses.

The AstraZeneca vaccine has already been authorized in more than 50 countries.

It comes after Handelsblatt, a German newspaper, published a report citing anonymous German health officials which said AstraZeneca's vaccine was only 8% effective.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, whose office spearheaded the bloc's procurement program, has been heavily criticized for the EU's slow vaccine roll-out.

Outcomes of the clinical trials have recently been confirmed in real-world evidence in a Scottish study on 1.1 million people, which showed a 94% reduction of hospitalisation in the over-60 population.

Responding to the worries of medical professionals who experienced mild flu-like side effects to the AstraZeneca vaccine, Fischer recommended taking paracetamol in parallel with the injection.

The vaccine has only been approved for under-65s in Germany, and Merkel is 66.

"Therefore we deliver half of the assumption, which is half of the number of doses per litre, then the prediction is half what you expected".

None of the approved COVID vaccines are manufactured in Canada.
