Bandits have reportedly kidnapped over 350 students of Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe, Talata Mafara local government area of Zamfara state.

Confirming the incident to Channels Television via a telephone conversation, the state commissioner for information, Hon.

"The bandits were too many and they all seemed to be carrying heavy arms as we heard gunshots from all parts of the town and when the shots stopped, we heard that the students had been taken away", he said.

The Zamfara State government has also confirmed the abduction through the Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs, Abubakar Dauran, in an interview with journalists on Friday.

Over 300 girls were said to have been abducted by the gunmen.

The latest abduction in Zamfara comes at a time when banditry is increasingly threatening the peace of the nation, especially from within the northeastern and northwestern region.

A major focus for the bandits in recent times has been to attack secondary schools and whisk students away, mostly, in a bid to use them as bargaining chips in their negotiations with the government.

Bandits had also a year ago kidnapped over 300 schoolboys from Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina State.

Kidnappers dressed in military fatigue captured 42 people, including 27 schoolboys, three teachers and other relatives of school staff from Government Science College in Kagara, Niger State last week.

Aside from Kankara and Kagara, non-state actors had also abducted hundreds of secondary school girls from Chibok, in Borno State; and Dapchi in Yobe State.
