Covid-19: Locations visited by latest Auckland community case revealed

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says Auckland will be put into a seven-day lockdown from Sunday after a coronavirus community case of unknown origin was recorded.

The announcement came after a new case was detected in the community - a sibling of a Papatoetoe High School student.

Ms Ardern said the latest patient had experienced symptoms since earlier in the week and could have infected others.

This raised the possibility that the infection had been acquired in the community.

The case also visited a supermarket and a university.

Arden defended the Government's decision to move back down to alert level 1 last week, and said the new case - Case M - had broken the rules, while they should have been self-isolating.

Ardern and Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield announced the alert level change at a hastily-arranged press conference after an emergency Cabinet meeting on Saturday evening.

"People who should have been in isolation, weren't", she said.

Bloomfield said the new case had developed symptoms on Tuesday and lost his sense of taste and smell on Wednesday - a common marker of Covid-19.

Test results for the other family members are expected Saturday evening as well as genome sequencing results.

'We still need an environment where people will speak up and come forward and be tested'. However, he was only tested on Friday. In mid-February, Auckland's almost 2 million residents were plunged into a snap three-day lockdown after a family of three were diagnosed with the more transmissible United Kingdom variant of COVID-19. Anyone experiencing unusual muscle aches should consider these a Covid-19 symptom and contact Healthline.

Those who visited these locations were considered casual contacts and should self monitor for symptoms for 14 days, Bloomfield said.

She said it's "strongly assumed" that the new case is genomically linked to the South Auckland cluster.
