Ghana first to get vaccines under global Covax scheme

  • Ivory Coast becomes second country to receive COVAX vaccines

"With the first shipment of doses, we can make good on the promise of the Covax facility to ensure people from less wealthy countries are not left behind in the race for life-saving vaccines", said Henrietta Fore, executive director of Unicef, which delivered the vaccines. As part of the UN Country Team in Ghana, UNICEF and World Health Organization reiterate our commitment to support the vaccination campaign and contain the spread of the virus, in close cooperation with all partners, including Gavi and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).

It is not a matter of money, it is a matter of whether there are enough doses of vaccines for COVAX to buy for developing or less-developed countries.

Vaccination programs against the coronavirus are underway mainly in developed countries while many developing countries have no prospect of starting them.

COVAX is only planning to provide enough vaccine to immunize about 20% to 30% of people in poorer countries - a figure that will still leave those nations vulnerable to coronavirus outbreaks.

"The Africa CDC regulatory task force has now approved the emergency listing of two versions of AstraZeneca vaccines: the Oxford vaccine, that is the one produced in South Korea, and the second in India", Nkengasong said.

Solidarity in the global endeavor against the Covid-19 pandemic has so far proved to be meaningless as far as the fair distribution of vaccines is concerned.

On Feb. 19, the Africa Vaccine Acquisition Task Team (AVATT), which was set up by the AU with the aim to immunise 60 per cent of the continental population, said that Russian Federation had offered 300 million doses of the Sputnik V vaccine to the AU.

"Serum Institute of India is delighted to partner with AstraZeneca in bringing this vaccine to India as well as low-and-middle-income countries".

"It is strongly recommended for countries to use the AstraZeneca vaccine even if the. new variants are present", the World Health Organization said in a statement last week.

The AstraZeneca vaccine, which requires two doses, is pending approval from Health Canada.

That delay led numerous poorer countries to rush to sign their own deals, potentially undermining Covax's efforts to get shots to the neediest people.

Several wealthier countries have come under fire for buying up huge quantities of vaccines - the United Kingdom, for instance, has deals for enough to cover its population more than five times over.

Following the arrival of the vaccines, information Minister-designate Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said the vaccines will be deployed to health facilities from Tuesday, March 2. But the lack of detail now is worrying, and some experts say countries will be unlikely to donate any shots until they know how long immunity lasts, and against which variants.

Other rich countries, such as Canada, New Zealand and Singapore, have applied to receive vaccines through COVAX even though they have their own supplies.

AstraZeneca said its European Union supply chains would only be able to deliver half of an expected order of 180 million doses, but assured it would fill the gap by using its global network.
