Zamfara police said they had begun search-and-rescue operations with the army to find the "bandits" who took the 317 girls from the Government Girls Science Secondary School in the town of Jangebe.

He said the abductors invaded the town and took away the students at about 2:00 am local time (0100 GMT) on Friday, reports Xinhua.

Abubakar Dauran, Zamfara state commissioner of security and home affairs, who confirmed the information to reporters in the state capital of Gusau, said the gunmen abducted the female students of the Government Girls' Secondary School (GGSS) at Jangebe town in the Talata Mafara local government area of the state.

The recent abductions are symptomatic of a generalized fragmentation of the country, as ethnic groups demand not only greater autonomy, but also the definitive renunciation of a nation in which they have lost all trust and sense of belonging.

"These attack. puts (the children) at risk of never returning to school, as they or their parents think it's too unsafe".

"When you have these mass abductions now and you see victims are released relatively quickly, unlike Chibok, the one thing that has changed is money", Effiong said.

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sent an open letter to the UN Security Council and its members urging them to "urgently hold a special session on Nigeria and to visit the country to press the authorities to end continuing abductions of students and the increasing level of insecurity across the country".

He said: "They are not the ones that abducted the girls. I have two daughters in the school", said Sadi Kawaye.

It is Nigeria's third school attack in less than three months - a series that has revived traumatic memories of the "Chibok girls" kidnapped by extremists almost seven years ago.

Nigeria's UNICEF representative, Peter Hawkins, called for the children's immediate release. The incident drew widespread global attention.

It's a controversial strategy but one that yielded some positive results in the Niger Delta, which saw a reduction in crime after a similar amnesty programme in 2009.

Danjuma further stated that the association members were waiting to hear from the government to know what would be done to ensure the safety of schoolchildren, refusal of which might attract withdrawal of wards from boarding houses in the North. "What we meant by constructive arrangement is to mobilise security personnel to make sure that our schools are secured".

Many container schools were built as temporary learning spaces as part of the scheme, but it is not known if any fences were built in communities affected.

Though most of the recent kidnappings have happened in the north-west, which were not covered by the Safe Schools Initiative, the 2018 abduction of 110 schoolgirls from Government Science School, Dapchi in north-eastern Yobe state raised questions about the success of the initiative.
