  • BREAKING: Alek Minassian found criminally responsible for Toronto van attack

A Canadian man who killed 10 people by ploughing a van into pedestrians in Toronto has been found guilty on all 26 charges related to the 2018 attack.

Defense lawyer Boris Bytensky said in his closing arguments that Minassian's ASD left him incapable of discerning right from wrong and making a rational choice when he chose to target bystanders. As of Tuesday, Alan Dershowitz, a member of the Trump legal defense for the ex-president's first Senate impeachment trial, said "nobody [on the Trump team] has reached out to me yet" regarding this suit, but added that he personally believes Trump's rhetoric on January 6 is "protected by the First Amendment" and that "I would hope that the ACLU would take on a case like this."The suit adds to a growing list of legal troubles now facing former President Trump, his family, and his associates, since leaving office. After a victory at the Supreme Court in February, Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance obtained copies of Trump's tax returns".

In refusing to use his name in her verdict, Molloy noted Minassian said he would be very disappointed if people didn't know his name after what he did.

"We now can start to close this terrible chapter and try to move on to a new norm".

"It does not matter that he does not have remorse, nor empathise with the victims. Lack of empathy for the suffering of victims, even an incapacity to empathise for whatever reason, does not constitute a defence".

The trial heard that Minassian fantasized about mass killings for years, starting when he was in high school, where he was bullied.

At one point he became fixated on an American mass murderer who hated women. He said he had joined an online community of like-minded men who described themselves as "incels" or "involuntary celibates", whose sexual frustrations led them to embrace a misogynist ideology.

Minassian told a detective hours after the attack that he sought retribution against society because he was a lonely virgin who believed women wouldn't have sex with him.

Later he mentioned different motives to different doctors who analyzed him.

"Rob Thomas at 32 Division. he made extensive inculpatory statements including that he had set out to kill people that day and that he had rented the van nearly three weeks in advance, deliberately choosing one that would be small enough to manoeuvre on the sidewalk but large enough to inflict maximum damage", reads a portion of the ruling.

Around 1:30 p.m. on a bright and warm April day, Minassian sat in the driver's seat at Yonge Street and Finch Avenue at a red light. When it turned green, he floored it, hopping the curb.

The killer was arrested moments later after a failed attempt to commit suicide by cop.

The 10 who lost their lives are Munir Abdo Habib Najjar, Chul Min "Eddie" Kang, Anne Marie D'Amico, Dorothy Sewell, Beutis Renuka Amarashingha, Mary Elizabeth Forsyth, So He Chung, Andrea Bradden, Geraldine Brady, and Ji Hun Kim.

Minassian, 28, faces a minimum life term of 25 years in prison.
