"I have accepted Neera Tanden's request to withdraw her name from nomination for Director of the Office of Management and Budget", Biden said in a statement.

"I have the utmost respect for her record of accomplishment, her experience and her counsel, and I look forward to having her serve in a role in my Administration", Biden said. "She will bring valuable perspective and insight to our work".

White House chief of staff Ron Klain initially insisted the administration was "fighting our guts out" for her.

Tanden needed just 51 votes in an evenly-divided Senate, with Vice President Kamala Harris acting as a tiebreaker.

Tanden had served as head of the Center for American Progress, an economic think tank, when she issued her tweets, among them calling Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., "Voldemort", the Harry Potter villain; labeling Sen.

Biden's pick to head the White House budget office withdrew on Tuesday. Tanden later faced senators on the Budget Committee, including Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, who said some of her past comments amounted to "vicious attacks made against progressives".

Earlier in a letter to Biden, Tanden said it has been an "honour of a lifetime to be considered for this role and for the faith placed in me".

Even Murkowski was not spared in Tanden's caustic Twitter feed. No Republican has offered their support for the bill. But moderates like Sen.

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska had been seen as a potential swing vote and met with Tanden on Monday afternoon to discuss her nomination.

Citing her "overly partisan statements", Sen.

"I am writing to you to withdraw my nomination for Director of the Office of Management and Budget", she said in the statement. "We must take meaningful steps to end the political division and dysfunction that pervades our politics". Biden had said he did not intend to pull Tanden's nomination and that he believed they would find the votes to get her confirmed.

"It will have zero impact on my decision making", she said. Especially compared to Trump appointees to the job, he added, "I think she's pretty damn qualified". For this reason, I can not support her nomination.

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican Sens. Then her path to confirmation narrowed further after two centrist GOP senators, Susan Collins of ME and Mitt Romney of Utah, announced their opposition as well. In one, Tanden had called Collins "the worst".

She said Congress 'has to be able to trust the OMB director to make countless decisions in an impartial manner, carrying out the letter of the law and congressional intent'. "Neera Tanden has neither the experience nor the temperament to lead this critical agency. Her past actions have demonstrated exactly the kind of animosity that President Biden has pledged to transcend".

In the days after the election, Tanden also deleted more than 1,000 tweets from her personal account, some of which were reviewed by CNN's KFile.

Yet the White House continued to express confidence.

President Joe Biden was hit with his first cabinet defeat on Tuesday as his pick to oversee the White House budget office withdrew from consideration after generating resistance from a key conservative Democrat and a group of moderate Republican senators.

As for Murkowski, she told The Hill newspaper that she did not tell the White House how she would vote on Tanden and the White House never asked her. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., indicated last week that he would oppose Tanden's nomination.

Portman ultimately said he would oppose the nomination.

'If Susan Collins and Jeff Flake actually believed the House would go along with DACA and Alexander Murray, they have no business being legislators because they are criminally ignorant'. Susan Collins of ME and Mitt Romney of Utah all said in recent weeks that they would oppose her confirmation, pointing to Tanden's past criticisms of lawmakers on social media.
