India's Bharat Biotech says Covid-19 vaccine shows 81% interim efficacy

Beijing-based biopharmaceutical company Sinovac's CoronaVac vaccine's data on the first and second phase trials were published in the Lancet, a reputed scientific journal. The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines were found to be more than 90 per cent effective.

Data indicates the vaccine can also effectively combat the variant first spotted in the United Kingdom, according to an analysis by India's National Institute of Virology.

The results, evaluated by an independent data safety and monitoring board, show that the vaccine is well-tolerated and efficacious across a wide range of age groups and variants, the ICMR added. For instance, Covaxin was granted restricted approval in "clinical trial mode" without any efficacy data.

India reported 17,407 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the total to 11.16 million.

Also known as Gam-COVID-Vac, the vaccine uses a heterologous recombinant adenovirus approach using adenovirus 26 (Ad26) and adenovirus 5 (Ad5) as vectors for the expression of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike protein. Among the major COVID vaccines in development to date, only Gam-COVID-Vac uses this approach.

Covishield, on the other hand, has an efficacy of 70.4 per cent on an average in preventing Covid-19, as per the interim analysis of its late-stage clinical trials conducted in the United Kingdom and Brazil.

The AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine has been found to be about 62 per cent effective in preventing infection. "So clearly, there is a lack of transparency here and there should be an informed decision keeping all the aspects in mind", added Dr. Gajendra Singh.

Covaxin is stable at 2 to 8 degree Celsius (refrigerator temperature) and are shipped in a ready-to-use liquid formulation that permits distribution using existing vaccine supply chain.
