  • N A Chancellor Rishi Sunak has'shamefully insulted every single member of NHS staff, said Labour's Jonathan Ashworth

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, mental health and patient safety minister Nadine Dorries noted that many other public sector workers were facing a pay freeze, adding that 1% was all the government could afford.

"We've all been touched by, or personally experienced, help by NHS workers".

Although the Pay Review Body makes recommendations to the government, ultimately it is ministers who decide pay levels for the NHS.

The government is facing a furious backlash after calling for healthcare staff in England to be restricted to a pay rise of 1%.

It has not yet been revealed which government experts will be joining him at the press conference.

"Rishi Sunak's promised to be open and honest with the public yet shamefully insults every single member of NHS staff sneaking out this announcement and failing to include any mention of NHS pay in the budget". Taxpayers are supportive of a significant and fair pay rise for NHS workers - this year of all years.

"That's with record numbers of doctors and 10,600 more nurses working in our NHS, and with nursing university applications up by over a third. And so that is why we decided they have to have something, and we've recommended the one percent, which is what we can afford".

On Friday, Mr Gething said Welsh NHS workers "deserved a pay rise".

"Do the Government have any idea what a pay proposal like this will do to morale?"

He tweeted: "You can't rebuild a country by cutting nurses' pay".

Unite assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail said: "The Government's evidence to the NHS Pay Review Body, due to report in May, saying that it wants the pay of NHS staff pegged at 1%, is callous and takes no account of the public mood".

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has also criticised the proposed pay deal, which would amount to a pay cut in real terms.

Rachel Harrison, GMB National Officer, said: "This news will come as yet another kick in the teeth for NHS workers".
